Amazingly, there are 156 verses in the Bible (NIV) referring to the olive or an olive product. The olive tree and olive products are highly regarded in the Bible, specifically by God. Throughout the Old Testament and the New Testament, one of the main places of worship and prayer was at the Mount of Olives. According to the New Testament, Jesus went to the Mount of Olives to pray and communicate with God the Father often.
Olive products (such as olive oil and olive wood) were used to worship God and anoint believers, as referenced throughout the Bible. There are also several teachings that use the olive tree, olive roots, olive shoots and olive groves to make comparisons about how God expected humanity to live in communion with each other and with Him.
Books of the Bible Referencing the Olive
Believe it or not, every book in the Bible, both the Old Testament and the New Testament, reference the olive. More specifically, olive oil, the olive tree, olive groves, olives, olive shoot, olive root, the Mount of Olives, the olive crop, and olive wood are referenced over and over again.
The Significance of Olive Wood
1 Kings Chapter 6 talks about the use of olive wood to build beautiful products that were to be used in the sanctuary of the temple to worship God.
1 Kings 6:22-24 (NIV)
22 So he overlaid the whole interior with gold. He also overlaid with gold the altar that belonged to the inner sanctuary. 23 For the inner sanctuary he made a pair of cherubim out of olive wood, each ten cubits high. 24 One wing of the first cherub was five cubits long, and the other wing five cubits—ten cubits from wing tip to wing tip.
1 Kings 6:30-34 (NIV)
30 He also covered the floors of both the inner and outer rooms of the temple with gold. 31 For the entrance to the inner sanctuary he made doors out of olive wood that were one fifth of the width of the sanctuary. 32 And on the two olive-wood doors he carved cherubim, palm trees and open flowers, and overlaid the cherubim and palm trees with hammered gold. 33 In the same way, for the entrance to the main hall he made doorframes out of olive wood that were one fourth of the width of the hall. 34 He also made two doors out of juniper wood, each having two leaves that turned in sockets.
As you can see, olive wood and olive products were considered exceptional and worthy of God in biblical times. Olive products are referenced countless times.
